Overview

This unit is the first of a sequence of four units that integrates the development of aural skills with the theoretical understanding of music through listening, analysis, performance, notation and composition. It introduces students to the study and practical application of fundamental theoretical concepts in both the Western art music and jazz tradition. Areas of study include identifying and understanding intervals, chords, metre, rhythm, tonality, scales, melodies, chord function and part writing.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
